Mitigation for flood fringe areas: The requirements announced Sunday include refinishing basements with materials that resist water damage and can be cleaned; sealing all the openings in the basement wall to prevent seepage; raising wiring and outlets to protect electrical services; and protecting basement plumbing fixtures and equipment from backflow from public sewer lines. Griffiths said the government will provide an additional 15 per cent of the cost of repairing a home to go toward mitigation work. If more is required, it will fund additional work to make sure the home is up to the required standard. Griffiths said the government does not yet have an estimated price tag for the mitigation program, but said it could cost $10,000 on average to repair or rebuild a basement to these standards and added there are likely “thousands” of eligible homes in the flood fringe zone.
