Mob Attack Police: De Driehoek Bonaire (consisting of Governor Emerencia, Chief Public Prosecutor Mr Van Delft and the Chief of Police Mrs. Buitink) is responsible for the integrated security on Bonaire, from the standpoint of public order and security and criminal enforcement of the law. De Driehoek Bonaire is seriously concerned about the safety and nuisance caused by street racing by cars, quads, motorcycles and scooters on the road or on a road that is accessible from the public road. Following a number of incidents in recent months De Driehoek has put into place measures to stop this nuisance. These anti-social actions are a danger to drivers and bystanders and will not be tolerated. The actions of Friday and Saturday are an example of this: On Friday, August 9th from 22:30 hours, persons and vehicles were checked at various locations including in Playa, Nort Saliña and Rincon. During the searches, a scooter, narcotics and three knives were found. These are seized. On Saturday August 10 at around 18:00hrs there was a large group of more than 300 people active in street racing on kaya Ir. R. Statius van Eps. The police attended & a number of cars, scooters and motorcycles were seized. The vehicles were taken to the storage area in Playa, the patrol cars were followed by an angry crowd that gathered & about 40 police cars moved towards Playa. The street in front of the desk (Kaya LD Gerhart) where the seized vehicles were temporarily parked was cordoned off but the group broke through it. Despite warnings, the crowd continued to advance on the officers A group of about 150 people gathered & threw stones and bottles at officers. The situation declined to such an extent that pepper spray and several warning shots were fired to keep the mob at a distance. One person was injured as the result of the pepper spray. Six arrests were made & the Royal Military Police provided assistance to restore order. Eventually, at around 3:00am, the crowd dispersed.
