Mode of transmission of Ebola, Malaria or Typhoid fever The Ebola virus disease (EVD) is unlike typhoid fever or malaria even though the patients suffer from similar symptoms. It has high case fatality rate of approximately 90%. (Which means about 90% of people who acquire the disease will die.) • With Ebola, the virus reaches the human population through contact with the blood, bodily fluids or organs of infected animals, including fruit bats, chimpanzees, gorillas and monkeys. • Malaria has the mosquito as the host carrier; you get malaria by being bitten by the affected mosquitoes. • You can get typhoid fever if you eat food or drink beverages that have been handled by a person who is shedding Salmonella Typhi or if sewage contaminated with Salmonella Typhi bacteria gets into the water you use for drinking or washing food. Symptoms of EVD: • The symptoms of Ebola Hemorrhagic Fever infection are similar to diseases like typhoid fever and malaria. Therefore KINDLY SEEK immediate medical help if you have any malaria or typhoid like symptoms. Eg. Sudden onset of fever, intense weakness, muscle pain, headache and sore throat Prevention: Prevention and control is the key to stop the transmission of the Ebola virus disease, therefore: • In the absence of effective treatment and a human vaccine, raising awareness of the risk factors for Ebola infection and the protective measures individuals can take is the only way to reduce human infection and death. • Wash your hands as frequently as possible with soap and water • Community sensitization is essential Reference: Center for Disease Control and Prevention WHO Fact sheet N°103Updated April 2014
