Monday 23-9-2013 ARPEC Team led by VAN Vichet (David) Deputy Secretary General, assisted by representatives from AMRU, White Gold and Mekong Oryza met with Mr Kees van der Meer, WTO STDF Consultant, at ARPEC premises to discuss current issues related to SPS for the Cambodian Rice Sector. ARPEC Team debriefed the WTO Consultant on various high cost and inconvenient monopoly of CCIC on rice exports to China. Mr Kees explained that China’s stringent import requirement is the same as for their current export requirements to ensure China meets world class standard on SPS. ARPEC Team also noted that rice exports to EU have become more stringent too in terms of specific requirement related to SPS with EU Buyers over the recent shipments to EU market. It confirms the trend of stricter SPS requirement to be applied onto most commodities exports from Cambodia to the international markets. The WTO Consultant is completing his consultation tour in 4 countries including Cambodia and would present his findings in November 2013 to all stakeholders with ARPEC to be invited by then to verify the findings.
