Monday, January 27, 2014 Forecaster: Bill Murray I have to admit, when I was a kid, it gave me a little thrill to hear the news that a winter storm watch had been issued. To me, it meant that it was going to snow! Or at least it was likely that something was going to happen to get us an off day from school. Now it just means potential travel problems, or power issues or long lines at the grocery store to me. But to snow fans, it is still music to their ears. Winter storm watches blanket the area from southeast Texas across southern Louisiana, southern Mississippi and Alabama, central Georgia, South Carolina and southwestern North Carolina. They generally are for the period beginning late tomorrow night and ending Wednesday morning. Winter storm warnings will be required for much of this area later today as the situation becomes clearer. ANOTHER COLD WAVE COMING: Highs on Sunday ranged from 58F at Anniston to 59F at Birmingham to 62F at Tuscaloosa. A real tropical heatwave compared to recent cold that has plagued us. The cold front delivering the fresh supply of arctic air is already into Northwest Alabama early this morning. It should reach the I-59 corridor about 10 a.m. By noon, temperatures will start falling through the 30s. Strong northwesterly winds behind the front will make it feel colder. Temperatures should reach the freezing mark by dark, and there they may stay until Wednesday. After dark, wind chills will be in the teens and sometimes in the single digits. By Tuesday morning, temperatures will range from 20-24F. FOR YOUR TUESDAY: Skies should become cloudy again Monday night as moisture spreads back northward. To the south, a wintry mix will develop from Southeast Texas eastward along the Gulf Coast by morning. Some of this precipitation will work as far north as I-20, resulting in light snow across parts of Central Alabama.
