Monday to Wednesday on ASUU Strike: Strike: Security Agencies Beam Searchlight On ASUU Leaders Nationwide The ASUU strike took a new dimension when ASUU alleged that members had been under the siege of security agencies nationwide. They said security agencies were beaming searchlights on the sources of finance of members of the union nationwide despite the stoppage of their salaries by the FG. University of Ibadan (UI), ASUU executives went underground shortly after last Thursday Congress held at the institution. The chairman of the UI chapter of the union, Dr Olusegun Ajiboye, alleged that he had received some calls warning him about his role in the ongoing strike. Ajiboye who called on the Inspector General of Police to save the lives of ASUU leaders nationwide said no amount of threat or clampdown on the union will make them back down from the strike until public education is saved from collapse. “Apart from the issue of finance, ASUU leaders are now being trailed all over the place. A majority of the our union leaders have now gone underground while many have their telephone lines bugged. Some are now living in fear of their lives.” Ajiboye who noted that ASUU members are not security threat to the nation added that as a democratic nation, citizens are guaranteed freedom of association. Ajiboye urged the FG to leave its leaders alone and implement the agreements it reached with the union for normalcy to return to university campuses nationwide. In a second report, Market women protest ASUU strike at National Assembly Protesting traders, under the aegis of National Market Women Association, Monday, stormed the National Assembly, demanding that ASUU, call off its strike. The protesters, who had been at the Ministry of Education and Office of the Head of Service, arrived the Assembly complex at 11.30a.m. President-General of the group, Mrs Felicia Sani, who led the more than 200 protesting women, said: “We are tired of seeing our children at home. We want our children back in school. Enough of this cheap blackmail. “We all know what they do with our year-one daughters in the university. We equally know that they sell handouts and handbooks. “Is this not worse than corruption of the highest order?” On FG/ASUU agreement, asked why she did not criticise the FG for failing to reach the agreement with ASUU, Mrs Sani said: “Which agreement? How do you expect lecturers in state universities to earn same salaries as Federal ones? That is impossible. “We are not educated, but you do not expect a hotel in my village to cost same price as a hotel in Abuja. “They are located in different places. So how can a state university lecturer earn same salary with his federal counterpart? “We are begging them for the last time. If we come out again we may have to chase them out of this country and replace them with so many jobless Nigerians.” In a third report, Reach A Compromise On Strike, Varsity VC Advises Nigerian Govt,ASUU The Vice-Chancellor of Unilorin, Prof Abdulganiyu Ambali, has advised the Nigerian govt and ASUU to engage in constructive dialogue and reach a compromise regarding their hard-line postures so as to end the strike. Prof. Ambali said, there should be meaningful dialogue between the parties in crisis. Again, the spirit of give and take must be played up. Once we embark on being our brothers keeper, justice will be done. Already, both groups are getting closer and in a couple of weeks or days, there will be a truce over the matter. Unilorin is the only Nigerian public university that is not involved in the ongoing ASUU strike. In a fourth report, Omotola Jalade speaks on ASUU Strike Popular Nollywood actress Omotola Jalade Ekeinde has advised the Nigerian govt and ASUU to reach a compromise to end the ongoing strike. And finally, NANS Condemns Lasting ASUU Strike The National Association of Nigerian Students has disowned the ongoing ASUU strike, and stated that certain demands by ASUU were “unrealistic and unimplementable.” Yinka Gbadebo, National President of the Union body, appealed to the University lecturers asking them to call off their strike and resume dialog with FG for the sake of Nigeria’s educational development. He said, “In the history of ASUU strike, no govt has ever responded positively the way President Jonathans administration has done and I believe strongly this gesture should be reciprocated for the sake of harmony. “In as much as we sympathise with ASUU over the predicament that forced the strike, millions of Nigerian students are simply tired of staying at home and hence appeal to call it off and resume negotiation immediately.” The strike is still on.
