Monk parakeets The monk parakeets (also known as Quaker parrots) are native to Argentina, but some years ago a New York dealer in the illegal pet bird trade about to get caught let loose a few of the birds into the wild to destroy evidence and evade arrest. Since then, the birds have multiplied and flocks of feral parakeets are spreading further in the New York area. No one expected them to survive the New York winters, but they have adapted well, building large, well-insulated nests to protect against the cold. So far there are no reports that they have harmed or affected native wildlife in any way.
