Monument Valley netters earn top seed for state tournament By Quentin Jodie Navajo Times WINDOW ROCK – As expected the Monument Valley Lady Mustangs earned the top seed in next week’s Arizona Division III state volleyball tournament. The Mustangs finished out the regular season with a three-set win over state qualifier Page (25-14, 25-17, 25-15) on Thursday and improved their overall record to 28-2 heading into the playoffs. In a crowded field of contenders, the Mustangs finished ahead of No. 2 Glendale Cactus, No. 3 Flagstaff, No. 4 Tuba City and No. 5 Chandler Seton Catholic. “It’s anybody’s game,” Monument Valley coach Rennell Gilmore said of the parity in Division III. “We are going into the state tournament with an open mind, knowing that anybody can win. Everybody on my team has to bring their ‘A-game’ and be ready to go.” The Mustangs will meet No. 16 Tucson Empire at 2 p.m. on Nov. 7 at the Prescott Valley Event Center. Empire enters this matchup with a 21-9 slate, including 10-0 record in sectional play. The winner of that game will take on the survivor between No. 8 Coconino and No. 9 Holbrook. Earlier this year, MV swept Holbrook 25-13, 25-13, 25-12 but in their match with Coconino they lost a barnburner 25-18, 23-25, 29-27, 16-25, 15-10. Tuba City is scheduled to play No. 13 Page as the Sand Devils are making a return trip to the playoffs after finishing fourth in sectional play with a 9-8 overall record. In Division IV, the Pinon Lady Eagles earned the No. 10 seed after winning its section over Ganado on Tuesday. The Eagles will play No. 7 Phoenix Horizon Honors on Nov. 6 at 5 p.m. Ganado, meanwhile, received the No. 15 seed, as they will have the tall task of facing No. 2 seed Phoenix Northwest Christian. Shonto Prep was the lone area team to make the playoff in Division V as the Lady Grizzlies went 7-1 in league play to earn the No. 11 seed. Shonto Prep will play No. 6 Glendale Joy Christian at 8 a.m.
