More disturbing news this morning! Police shoot man dead in suspected terror incident in Melbourne • by: John Ferguson • From: The Australian • September 23, 2014 11:38PM COUNTER-TERRORISM police have shot dead a suspected extremist after two officers were stabbed in a violent gun-and knife battle in suburban Melbourne. The joint Australian Federal Police and Victoria Police operation ended in a shootout near a police station in Melbourne’s southeast about 7.40pm. The dead man had reportedly made threats against Tony Abbott and apparently stabbed two officers who were rushed to hospital. He was reported to have been carrying an Islamic State flag. Victorian Premier Denis Napthine was being briefed on the incident, which was widely being report as terror-related. Sources said that the dead man was a “known extremist” who had been intercepted by two teams of police. He was understood to have had his passport cancelled. The precise details of these alleged threats the man had made, including when they were allegedly made, are unknown. The shooting came five days after sweeping anti-terrorism raids across Sydney and Brisbane thwarted an alleged plot to seize a member of the public and film them being beheaded. The attack was allegedly given the go-ahead by Mohamed Ali Baryalei, the most senior Australian in the ranks of Islamic State. Fifteen people were detained in last week’s raids, one of whom Omarjan Azari, appeared briefly in Sydney’s Central Local Court last week, charged with acting in preparation, or planning, for a terrorist attack. He was denied bail. The operation in Melbourne was believed to have involved two AFP officers and two Victoria Police officers. The shooting occurred in the southeastern suburb of Endeavour Hills, outside a police station. Teams of detectives swarmed the area around the bloody battle, searching for evidence and interviewing potential witnesses. Dr Napthine left an election debate early to be briefed on developments by Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Ken Lay. It was reported that at least one shot was fired before police and ambulance officials swooped to help the victims. One of the stabbing victims was taken to nearby Dandenong Hospital in a stable condition, while the other, possibly more seriously injured, was taken to the Alfred Hospital. Analysts have warned of the strong likelihood of arrests in Melbourne after attempts were made from Iraq and Syria to radicalise Australians.
