More rat-bastardry from the Germans!: Established in 1891 and located just a few paces from Rome’s famous Piazza Navona, it has drawn celebrities such as Robert de Niro, Madonna, Sophia Loren, Monica Bellucci and Rupert Everett, as well as artists, writers and film directors such as Fellini. But it is now under threat of closure – the owners of the building, the Teutonic Pontifical Institute of Santa Maria dell’Anima, a German Catholic foundation, plan to evict all the current tenants and turn it into a hotel. Alessio Serafini, 24, a member of the family that has run the cafe since the 1960s, said: “We’re hoping to collect 50,000 signatures protesting against the closure, which we will send to Rome council. We’ve even written to Pope Francis. We’ve tried to negotiate with the pontifical institute but they won’t listen to us.”
