Most Whistle-Blowers leak to expose wrongdoing in the past. Katharine Gun disclosed the plot as it was happening to stop something she thought was wrong-attacking the sovereign nation of Iraq. She worked as a Mandarin specialist at GCHQ, the UKs governments surveillance center. In 2003, she came across a top secret memo from the criminals at the NSA - National Security Agency. UK security operatives were asked to collaborate in an operation to find out personal information that could be used to blackmail UN delegates into supporting a resolution to attack Iraq. It focused on the swing nations on the UN Security Council: Angola, Cameroon, Chile, Bulgaria, & Guinea, as well as extra focus on Pakistan. She decided to leak the memo to the British newspaper The Observer. She was arrested, fired & faced trial under the Official Secrets Act. The Blair administration decided not to go through with the trial to avoid authenticating the memo. The document showed that what President George W. Bush was claiming at the time: We are doing everything we can to avoid war in Iraq — was a lie. The US Government wanted to attack Iraq & was willing to go to great lengths-even spying on & threatening innocent people to help sell the war. The Iraq War resolution sought by the US from the UN Security Council never passed. The US Government attacked anyway. Congress & many prominent Democrats, among them Hillary Clinton supported the war. Does the US Government spy to prevent terrorism or to build support for its own brand of terrorism? In 2010 from cables leaked to Wikileaks by Chelsea (formerly Bradley) Manning: The US State Department asked US envoys at UN headquarters & elsewhere to procure credit card & frequent flyer numbers, mobile phone numbers, email addresses, passwords & other confidential data from UN officials & foreign diplomats. Spying on UN missions is illegal according to the Vienna Convention. The US Government is more violent & just as lawless as those it is endless attacking.
