(Most of my life, in a nutshell, the last four weeks.) Me: So do you support raising the minimum wage? Candidate X: I support a living wage for everyone. Me: Terrific. Me too. But what monetary value would you attach to that? I mean reputable studies -- MIT, etc, -- have shown that the minimum wage isnt even close to a living wage. Candidate X: Thats really for the employer and employee to decide. Me: Yes, for the most part regarding salaries, you are absolutely right. But, for what many people would say are very good and important reasons, the government has imposed a floor. Do you support raising that floor? Candidate X: I could. It depends. Me: Okay. Well, lets try this using real numbers. New Yorks minimum wage is $8 an hour, it will go to $8.75 next year and to $9 the year after that. But the governor has proposed $10.10, and others think it should go as high as $12 now. What do you think? Candidate X. Well I could support a raise, but I dont have a specific number in mind. That would have to be negotiated. Me. Absolutely. It would have to be negotiated. But for negotiations to take place, all sides would have to reveal where they stand, you know using specifics, at least for a starting point. For instance, I would have to give you my number -- lets say its $10.10 -- but I would need your number so we can begin negotiations. What would your number be, you know, at least to start? Candidate X. OK, then, I guess I could live and support you on $10.10 (long pause)........But I wouldnt mandate it...
