Most of the time, Im not opinionated - why add stress to your life, right? - so I never give my two cents worth here on social networks - well, I have a jar full of pennies - so from time to time, Id like to use two cents from it. Todays the day! Ha! Ive been following and reading up on some of the laws, referendums, policies, opinions which seem to be highlighted mostly during the election times - however and sadly, it gets shoved back behind that grandmas suitcase once people are elected and paid for their appeasement. The issue with speaking Navajo is a requirement for Navajo Presidency. I completely understand and agree that this should be a requirement. Yes, I like to have our President to speak Navajo and preferably, also write and read in Navajo. By the same token, each of our Councilman should also have the same requirement. Yet, there is a bill currently floating through the channels to make provisions to the current language fluency requirement of the qualifications for office (President, Vice President, NN Council Delegate, Land, Farm, School Board, and Grazing Candidates) and that is to remove this language: Must be fluent in the Navajo and English language, Must be able to speak the Navajo language fluently, and to read and write the English language, Must be able to converse fluently in the Navajo language This is currently being sponsored by Lorenzo Curley. Makes me wonder if he is not that fluent in all aspect of the Navajo language and therefore wanting to make changes to avert his own qualifications as a NN Delegate. (with that, this comes to mind, one that speaks with forked tongues.....as a serpent?...hmmm) To really think about it, the removal of the said language above really deprives us of our Identity as Diné and thats exactly what is being done here. Anyhow, I still say, let the fluency in the Navajo Language be a requirement of anyone who is wanting to be public representation of the Navajo Tribe. Thereby it will cause some serious thought from the younger generation, that learning how to speak and understand the Diné language is and will still be important in the future. As far as who I support? Well, given that I only have 2 options - its always been my perspective - out with old, on with the new. Thats all.
