Mother Nature sure is full of wonder. When considering the problems of flight, man first ventured into the skies in hot air balloons. The problem, of course is balloons are at the mercy of the winds...thus not a practical flying machine. So, our next thoughts were how to fly as a heavier than air vehicle...birds are the first objects that come to mind. But well never be able to fly like birds because our architecture is dramatically different. Evolution has equipped birds with hollow bones, ours are solid. Birds have giant hearts relative to their size due to the need to pump blood through their systems at a high rate of speed to carry off the by-products of respiration. They are working hard for a long time and need to move new oxygen into the cells and to move out the carbon dioxide, lactic acid, and other effluents. Thus the huge hearts that can in some cases beat 1000 times per minute. I marvel at the result...this hummingbird for example.
