Motocross is not a team sport. Even the factory team riders win as individuals. However, motocross IS a family sport-both individually and collectively. A sort of traveling circus... And with the incredible tribute performed today, I wouldnt have it any other way. Another family lost their young son to this sport yesterday. Though I did not know the family personally, I have cried many times during this past week while he was fighting for his life. I have even questioned my own faith. With a heavy heart and confused soul, I have shed tears of sympathy for the family and their loss. Why let your child participate in such a dangerous sport?, I have been asked. My answer? How can I not? I couldnt dream of taking something away that my child loves so much only for my own worries. Does a soccer mom pull her kid from the sport when someone suffers severe head trauma by hitting the goal post? Or a hockey mom after hearing about a slit throat by a skate? Or the football mom whos friends child passes away from severe dehydration? Every sport can be dangerous. But think of the kids that never get the chance because theyve died in a car accident or of a terminal disease or have no family to support them in anything. Longevity of life is guaranteed to no one... So, judge me if you must, but Im going to turn in to my cramped hotel room and join my fellow carnies for another day of racing with my son-thankfully. My most sincere condolences to the Wentworth family. God speed Buddy, and all others that have lost their lives living their dream...
