Mountain Lions in Michigan, via Jonathan Schechter, who introduces the post Another cougar sighting in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan has been confirmed by the Michigan DNR. FYI: Many folks claim they see cougars, but the MDNR only confirms sightings when documented physical evidence exists. And that is the way it should be. A photo ALONE without habitat that can be document with a ground search of the location can be a hoax. And a sighting ALONE can be an illusion of reality- a well intended person thinks they saw a cougar because they want to see one and the mind fills in the blanks. But facts are facts and cougars (mountain lions) do wander far and wide in the wilds of Michigan. And although some humans are nearly phobic about the very existence of these Monsters of God ---they are not dining on our children. Want something to worry about? Worry about the deer that cause about a dozen fatal traffic accidents a year in our state. Worry about the drunk and distracted drivers on the highways. Worry about not getting your flu vaccine. Worry about artery clogging greasy burgers and a two pack a day smoking habit. And the other big rumor that makes the rounds and just wont die is totally laughable and ignorant: Cougars were secretly transported to Michigan by the DNR. Not so, even if your cousins best friend Joe heard from his sister-in-law Sue that an old DNR biologist in a bar told him they did so. FACT: Cougars are a historic native species of Michigan and are returning to/ expanding their range the old fashion way: By walking. (The attached MDNR link has information on how they accept cougar sighting reports)
