“Moving Forward… Forgiving Yourself” Here is the Celebrate Recovery Lesson from Monday. Take a look! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- SIN The actions we take & choices we make, as a result of our character defects & circumstances. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- As followers of Jesus Christ, when we sin, we find ourselves in two conditions: either we feel “condemned” about our sin, or we feel “convicted” by it. Condemnation 1. Guilt & Shame 2. Hide / Isolate / Cover-up 3. Move away from God Romans 8:1 There is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus. If I hold onto the condemnation of my sin, I am NOT following Christ, therefore, I am choosing the way of the enemy. The enemy Everything stays the same and may get worse. If nothing changes, nothing changes. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Conviction 1. Repent & Change 2. Sanctified (Holy) 3. Move closer to God 1 Thessalonians 4:3 God’s will is for you to be holy… The Holy Spirit Forgive myself and move forward in life, as God directs my path. • REPENT – turn away from sin, turn toward God - CHANGE • Learn & be WHO YOU ARE IN CHIRST! • WAIT ~ TRUST ~ PRAY ~ OBEY • Seek scripture – LIFE VERSE: Prov 3:5-6; Heb 5:16; Rom 8:31; Psalm 34, Psalm 40; Jer 29:11-12; Neh 8:10; Num 6:24-26; Phil 4:6-9; Psalm 23; Phil 4:13; John 15:16; 2Tim 1:7, John 10:10 Jeremiah 6:16 “This is what the LORD says: ‘Stand at the crossroads and look. Ask for the ancient paths; ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls. Keep Moving Forward... ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Step 9 – We made direct amends to people whenever possible, except when to do so would harm them or others. Principle 6 – Evaluate all my relationships. Offer forgiveness to those who have hurt me and make amends for harm I have done, except when to do so would harm them or others. THEN… Keep moving forward! What I gain, I must maintain! Step 9 leads to Steps 10, 11, & 12. Principle 6 leads to Principles 7 & 8. Keep moving forward! We’re NOT called to dispel the darkness – this is God’s job! We ARE called to turn on the Light! • 1 Peter 2:9 (He calls you out of darkness into His wonderful light!) • 1 John 1:7 (walk in the Light) • Matt 5:16 (let your light shine!) 1.I get rid of my bad thoughts by taking them captive under the obedience of Christ (1 Cor). I repent of them, then choose the truth! I choose to change. • TURN away from sin • Turn towards God 2. Sanctified (Holy) 1 Thessalonians 4:3 God’s will is for you to be holy… • Learn & be WHO YOU ARE IN CHIRST! • So… I’m repenting, I’m changing, and I am learning what being “Sanctified / Holy” is. • I am learning WHO I AM in CHRIST. • I begin to realize that there is one factor still present in my life – SELF CONDEMNATION. • I had NOT been truly forgiving myself and living as Jesus would have me live. I FELT UNWORTHY BEING FORGIVEN. That had to change! • And I don’t care what you’ve done. My Bible says that ALL have SINNED; that we ALL fall short. • SIN = The actions we take & choices we make, as a result of our character defects & circumstances. • SIN separates us from God. There is no measure to sin in God’s eyes. If you break one, you break them all. • The difference in sin is actually felt here on earth. The consequences are more mild or severe on earth – telling a lie and killing a child have vastly different early consequences. But to God, it’s all SIN. • ONLY through Jesus Christ can we be forgiven and set free of our sin. • If you stay in condemnation, you are working under the enemy. • If you are convicted by your sin, the Holy Spirit leads you. FORGIVE YOURSELF, then RECEIVE GOD’S FORGIVENESS! 1. Know who you are in Christ –If you are not forgiving yourself, the way you see yourself is not an accurate picture of what Christ has done for you. It is basically denying the work that Jesus accomplished for you on the cross! a. you need to see yourself as separated from your sins.. b. holiness – DEAD tp that! DONE with that! Hebrews 9:14, …purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God." 2. Understand the importance of forgiveness a. 1 John 1:9 “…faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us for all unrighteousness.” b. IF we don’t RECEIVE God’s forgiveness of ourselves, we will NOT be healed or made holy (This is God’s will for us – 1 Thes 4:3) or be obeying His Word. c. Romans 3:24, "Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:" GRACE – FREE GIFT! 3. Realize how YOU (not others) keep yourself STUCK in the past by not forgiving yourself. Stop punishing yourself; let go of self-pity, negative attention a. 2 Cor 3:17 Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is FREEDOM!” 4. High expectations of yourself – false pride (thinking you’re greater or lesser than another) 5. Let go of others high expectations of you; don’t allow them to blame you once you have done what is right. a. My Bible says that I am blessed/happy when other persecute me. I am set apart. I am supposed to be different b. Romans 8:1 There is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus. c. I have to earn back trust, do what’s right… and keep moving forward d. CHANGE IS POSSIBLE! – HOME RUN The Movie quote… “As far as I as can see, you’re the only one who isn’t changing.” 6. See forgiveness as a journey… Phil 1:6 He who began a good work in your will keep on working… 3. Move closer to God • WAIT ~ TRUST ~ PRAY ~ OBEY • Seek scripture – LIFE VERSE: Mine is Luke 7:47 “I tell you, her sins – and they were many – have been forgiven, for she has shown me much love.” Prov 3:5-6 (Trust in the Lord); Heb 5:16 (never will I leave you, never forsake you); Rom 8:31( If God is for us , who can be against us?); Psalm 34, Psalm 40; Jer 29:11-12; Neh 8:10 (Joy of Lord); Num 6:24-26 (Grace); Phil 4:6-9 (Peace); Psalm 23; Phil 4:13 (I can do all things…); John 15:16 (I chose you) ; 2Tim 1:7 (no fear, power, love & self-control), John 10:10 Jeremiah 6:16 “This is what the LORD says: ‘Stand at the crossroads and look. Ask for the ancient paths; ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls.’” Keep Moving Forward... Forgiven much, I am; love much, I do. No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord. Proverbs 1:33 But all who listen to me will live in peace, untroubled by fear of harm.” John 14:27 “I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid. Romans 10:9 If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord. The promises of God are powerful and awesome to grasp. Village View Community Church
