Mthembu finally an Amakhosi player 2014-06-20 KAIZER Chiefs have finally signed striker Siphelele Shaka Zulu Mthembu, six years after losing him to rivals Orlando Pirates in a bitter battle for his signature. Mthembu, who has suddenly become one of the most wanted players in the top flight after a storming season with Platinum Stars in the last campaign, has committed himself to a two-year contract at Naturena. While Chiefs boss Bobby Motaung was reluctant to confirm the signing of the 27-year-old striker, insiders told Sowetan Mthembu was seen in Naturena this week. We are going to make an announcement when we have finalised all our deals, said Motaung. Stars coach Allan Freese yesterday said it was always going to be difficult to hold on to Mthembu - who was also wanted by big spenders Mamelodi Sundowns, among others - after Chiefs made a sudden move for the player last month. Mthembus contract expires at the end of this month, Freese said yesterday. He promised that he would renew his contract with us for the new season. I am surprised that you are saying he has joined another team. Well, there is nothing we can do about it. We will have to look for a replacement. It was second time lucky for Chiefs after losing Mthembu in a bitter tug-of-war with Pirates in 2008 after both clubs claimed to have signed contracts with the player.
