Mugabe’s wife Grace alleges plot to oust him over age Mrs Grace Mugabe during a past political rally. She has claimed that some senior Zanu-PF officials are plotting to oust President Mugabe saying he is too old to rule. She said most of President Mugabe’s lieutenants were feigning allegiance to him in public but plotted his downfall behind his back. Zanu PF is reportedly divided into two factions jostling to position themselves in the event that President Mugabe decides to retire. The First Lady claimed President Mugabe was God-sent and Zimbabwe would never have a better leader than him. President Mugabe reportedly warned senior party leaders against perpetrating factionalism. Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe’s wife, Grace, has claimed that there is a plot by senior officials in the ruling Zanu-PF party to oust her husband on the basis that he is now too old. The First Lady made the claim on Thursday when she addressed a Zanu-PF rally at Chinhoyi near Harare. She said most of President Mugabe’s lieutenants were feigning allegiance to him in public but plotted his downfall behind his back. “We have been hearing that some people have been leading factions for a long time and now we hear that they are receiving money from the United States to remove President Mugabe,” she said. “We see them dancing kongonya (a local traditional dance) here as if they love the president. They are good at chanting slogans in public, but deep down in their hearts they don’t love him. “At night they are busy plotting his ouster claiming that he is old hence he must go so that they can take over,” she said. Zanu-PF is reportedly divided into two factions jostling to position themselves in the event that President Mugabe decides to retire or dies in office. Vice President Joice Mujuru and Justice minister Emmerson Mnangagwa have been accused of leading the factions, but both have denied that they have presidential ambitions. The factionalism has degenerated to public fights through the media among top ruling party officials as Zanu-PF draws close to its elective congress in December. President Mugabe, 90, is the only one assured of retaining his post unopposed at the congress. Zanu-PF’s women’s wing in August nominated the First Lady to take over as its new leader at the congress, saying the move would stem factionalism. SENT BY GOD The First Lady claimed President Mugabe was God-sent and Zimbabwe would never have a better leader than him. “(President) Mugabe is a God-fearing man. He always prays to God even so that those who hate him may see the light. “He is a strong man but we end up stressing him through what we do. These fights are not good at all for the party. “Party members dabbling in factionalism have no wisdom. What we saw during the youth congress elections was really sad,” Mrs Mugabe said. She also said that there were reports that some Zanu-PF officials had started buying votes. “Some senior party members are buying votes. If you buy some and leave others who will cater for those left out? “We have heard a lot about some people in the leadership receiving money from the US to buy voters. The president knows it all, but he just keeps quiet and prays,” she added. President Mugabe reportedly warned senior party leaders against perpetrating factionalism at a meeting of the Zanu-PF top decision-making body, the politburo, last Wednesday.
