Mum question:Im seeking some advice about an 8 week old boy who was 10lb 4oz born, so a big boy, who im bf. I have a 3 yr old also who I bf until 15months, so im familiar with the process. My 8 week old has been feeding every 2/2.5 hours for the last 4 days and only sleeping an hour at a time during the day. Of a night he is feeding at 6pm then again at 12am, 3am and 5am. Any ideas what might be happening? Im exhausted with all the feeding and lack of down time which I had been getting previously. He cries when taken off the boob, spews 80% of the time after a feed, always gets his wind up. Ive tried to not overfeed him to avoid spewing but he just screams, and ive tried stretching him longer between feeds but that also results in screaming. My gut tells me it relates to being tired but also because hes a big boy...open to any ideas! Thanks Mum question: He sounds as though hes going a good stretch between 6pm and 12 am - that would be considered all night in infant sleep studies. This means that your baby will need extra feeds to get his quota in 24 hours. 8 weeks is a big new wonder week so often babies are restless at this time - check out thewonderweeks . If he is spewing a lot, have a look at my blog posted earlier tonight about reflux. Its not worth stretching him out between feeds - as you say, hes a big boy so will be hungry and if he is spaced out during the day he is sure to wake hungry at night. His change in feeding patterns could also be a growth spurt - these can happen at any time. Carrying your baby upright in a wrap or carrier for some time during the day may be helpful - it will help him regulate his little body as he gets used to the world, and will reduce stimulation and help him sleep more as he will be snuggled against you too. And studies have shown that babies who are carried/worn cry less. Hang in there -it will get easier.
