Musicians are playing in Yarmouk camp, a Damascus neighbourhood - TopicsExpress

Musicians are playing in Yarmouk camp, a Damascus neighbourhood home to the citys Palestinian refugees. Yarmouk is one of the worst sites of the starvation facing Syrians in areas besieged by the government. But amid the devastation, musicians with a battered piano are making music for their neighbours. As the video pans across the destruction of the neighbourhood, the chorus of the song is, Oh displaced people, return. The journey has gone for too long. Yarmouk, we are part of you and that will never change. The Syrian government has been accused by activists and aid organisations of using starvation as a weapon in places like Yarmouk as part of its ongoing siege of neighbourhoods with a presence of rebel forces. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights estimates at least 86 people died from lack of food and medicine in Yarmouk. The United Nations Relief and Works Agency, which oversees aid to Palestinians across the Middle East, was able to enter the camp recently to deliver at least 3,000 food rations to tens of thousands of residents. | via The Stream | youtu.be/ymweKAmoQ5c
