Musicians meeting: 6pm, Monday Sept 16 It’s not a Hobby, it’s a Profession The Australian Freelance Musicians Alliance (AFMA), a new branch of the Media, Entertainment & Arts Alliance created to advocate for the rights of working musicians in NSW musicians, has called a meeting of industry participants to plan for a better, fairer and more sustainable music industry. AFMA’s aim is to build a powerful and united voice for musicians to protect and monitor their rights and campaign for improvements to the industry. AFMA was formed following MEAA’s efforts to help musicians from the defunct 2012 Peats Ridge Festival get paid. MEAA helped festival creditors appoint a liquidator of their own choosing, and while this was not successful in ensuring musicians were paid what they were owed, the rigorous liquidation process did at least ensure that the festival’s management had to account for its actions. The Peats Ridge Festival’s demise is just one of many issues highlighting the need for a powerful voice representing musicians. Musicians Meeting 6pm, Monday, September 16 NSW Teachers Federation Conference Centre 37 Reservoir Street, Surry Hills. The purpose of the meeting is to vote for a campaign plan to achieve improvements for the music industry. The meeting will hear the results of a musicians’ survey identifying key industry issues, and provide a forum for discussion involving some of Sydney’s most respected musicians.
