Muslims for Human Rights (MUHURI) has decided to intervene in the ongoing stalemate between the defunct Municipal workers and the Mombasa county government. As an organization, we have received many complaints from Mombasa residents who have protested the lack of service delivery despite the fact that they have continued to pay taxes and rates to the council. As a result, the on going strike is denying residents their right to be served by both their county government and the County government staff. This situation is an affront to the rights of Mombasa residents and must be amicably addressed to ensure all matters are resolved and normal services resume. In light of the above, MUHURI has been in contact with both the council workers union and the Mombasa county government to come to the table for negotiations. The two sides have agreed for MUHURI to mediate and address the pending issues. In order to ensure a lasting solution that satisfies both parties, we have decided to amongst other things undertake a social audit exercise to ascertain the true position of the human resource department at the County government offices. The social audit will include both public participation exercise to give Mombasa residents an opportunity to make their input and professional review of the books of accounts of the department. The public participation will be held by MUHURI in partnership with the County government workers union and the county government. It will include holding public meetings in each of the six constituencies to get input from Mombasa county residents on the situation of the council and how it can be improved to provide better services. The professional review of the books will be undertaken by the internationally acclaimed audit firm - Ernest and Young - which will go through the records at the County offices to ascertain the facts and make recommendations on the way forward. All parties involved have hereby agreed to abide by the audit findings and ensure better services to the residents of Mombasa County.
