My Little Polemic There is exquisite yet agonising irony in our modern world. The society that emerged from World War Two found idealism and determination to build a better world after the devastation. New values infused a movement that would improve the world and protect it from the evils that had culminated in the horrors of the World war. Freedom would prevail over tyranny. Europe’s cities lay smashed. Millions were reduced to homelessness and displacement. A militaristic culture had initiated the greatest war, the most severe repression and the ugliest mass murder in human history. Law had been perverted and subverted to plunder, oppress, cheat, dehumanise, disenfranchise and serve the ends of ruthless and destructive despotism. Nations, minorities and religions were victimised. Torture and genocide ranged unfettered. National and other hatreds had exploded into war. Too many victims perished with no refuge. Expansionist militarism has sought to conquer country after country, but was defeated at tremendous cost. The world emerged battered sickened and yet determined to build a better society for all. Democracy squared up to atheistic tyranny and eventually prevailed. Europe has sought greater unification and cooperation. What could not be unified through conquest and mutual subjugation has become a bastion of joint effort and the promotion of human rights, the rule of law and democracy. It is unimaginable that Britain and Germany, Italy and France and other EU countries could ever go to war again. To avoid war again the countries of the world formed the United Nations to mediate and settle disputes rather than resort to war and killing. We have the Universal declaration of Human Rights, Courts of Human Rights, protection against oppression, well resourced organisations to counter illness and displacement, and open borders. Refugees are taken in and protected, given legal assistance, shelter and clothing. We have sophisticated welfare and promote tolerance and acceptance of all minorities. Jews were displaced, sequestrated, disenfranchised, dehumanised, imprisoned, deported and murdered. Yet let us look at the world today. Europe’s cities are intimidated by a militaristic, expansionist, intolerant anti-Semitic movement. This movement openly declares its opposition to and condemnation of democracy as vacuous. It has been uninvited in, housed, enfranchised, supported, maintained, welcomed and encouraged by western democracy. It seeks to impose its undisguised tyranny on the world that has given it so much succour. It supports and practices brutal amoral warfare. It seeks genocide. It uses the laws and courts of Europe, and the world, to promote its agenda, which includes the negation and subjugation of those institutions, laws and courts. Its allies control the human rights groups, calling the innocent guilty, labelling the defenders as war criminals, and allowing its other allows to pursue murder, torture, subversion, ethnic cleansing and every other evil the modern world said it wanted to curb. And yet anyone who dares open their mouth to speak the truth is not seen as a champion of human rights, or even human beings. Criticize this perverted human rights culture and you are the fascist, the Nazi, the enemy of democracy. The human rights movement, the European Union and much of our modern world has become the vehicle for the modern militarists, the true heirs of Hitler.
