My Memorial Day thoughts today go out to my father. Donald James - TopicsExpress

My Memorial Day thoughts today go out to my father. Donald James Richway. Son of Gertrude and James Richway of Pontiac MI. My dad volunteered for the US Army during the Korean War. He never spoke much of it but when he did it was short and normally funny stories. This I do know, he was a forward observer. Not the safest job to have. I think he lost three radio operators during his stint over there. I know he almost got court marshaled for blowing up the dump. He set it on fire to get rid of the rats not knowing that cases of bad ammunition was tossed in the land fill also. The entire unit was pinned down for several hours until all the ordnance blew up. No one turned him in though. I will never forget how happy he was when I told him I enlisted. He asked me what training unit I was going to. He asked me if I was going to Camp this or Camp that. I told him I didn’t know anything about any Camp, I was going to some Island. He told me that the Army didn’t have any training camps on any Islands. Then I told him I joined the Marine Corps he said I was a G.D FOOL! He looked at my mom and told her she raised a G.D FOOL! Twenty years later, I retired as a Gunnery Sergeant. My father raised me to be what I am today. The Marine Corps just finely tuned what he started. Thanks Dad! Thinking of you on this day! With all my love, your proud son, Phillip Joe Richway
