My Mom (Opal Fitzgerald) loved the day after Thanksgiving when I - TopicsExpress

My Mom (Opal Fitzgerald) loved the day after Thanksgiving when I was growing up. That was the day the radio stations started playing Christmas Carols. She would sing right along with the singers. When I was a teenager, Mom and I would dance to Brenda Lees Rocking Around the Christmas Tree. I know the younger generation will not believe this, but before the shopping centers and malls, Owenton was beautiful & bustling the month of December. We kids loved to go to town at night because of the lights and gaiety. Lermans had new, warm coats, white cloth tennis shoes, purses, etc. Zuckermans was the store for the rich kids. Any Saturday afternoon, the store was bustling with shoppers and gift wrappers working their magic right at the counter. Teen-age girls all wanted the straight skirts with the kick-pleat and matching sweaters. They were the most beautiful colors Ive ever seen. Western Auto was the place for toys. Minchs was popular....especially when the newest tv was playing in the window. People would stop on the sidewalk and watch. To get around them, you had to walk out in the street. The Dime Store was every kids dream. Yelp, those were the good ole days.
