My Morning Paper 14th March 2014 What About the Rest of Us? “PM defends Lightbourne” The Nassau Guardian, 14th March, 2014 Excerpt from this article: “Prime Minister Perry Christie yesterday blasted the Nassau Guardians revelation that his chief value-added tax (VAT) coordinator Ismael Lightbourne has not paid real property taxes in over 20 years due to “financial incapacity.” In fact, the prime minister also told the house he intervened in an effort to help Lightbourne save his home.” Beside the Prime Minister being late with again with this this information or maybe he revealed it but no one was listening at the time, I find a few things interesting about this article. Mr. Prime Minister; first of all yes indeed these are troubling times but you choose to defend, fervently a person that has not paid his real property taxes in over twenty years? Surely there must have been a period during the past twenty years wherein this person may have/should have been able to make some effort to pay; let us say during the time frame of 2003-2007? Sir, a vast majority of Bahamians are experiencing economic incapacities at this time due to the sluggish economy; my question to you Sir is, are you willing to personally intervene on behalf of each and every one of them? What is it that has made Mr. Lightbourne, a man whom it seems simply refused to pay these taxes when he was able to, so fortunate of your blessings? As Prime Minister Perry Christie ‘crusades’ for his good friend he [the Prime Minister] seems to continue a trend that has been a trait of the Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) when stories appear in print about them and that is “attack the media”. This was seen in the latest ‘controversies’ with the Hon. Fred Mitchell, Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Hon. Leslie Miller, Chairman of BEC. As the Prime Minister and his government is about to implement VAT and is light of their mortgage relief plan failing and lying in ruin as they attempt to re-vamp it, I asked what has it [the government] done to assist those among us that are not good friends or family?
