My Out Of Office email now reads: Please note that I will be out of the office on Thursday 31st October 2013 in support of the industrial action organised by Higher Education unions. This is the first year Ive been realistically able to take the hit of a days wage to participate in strike action. That its taken me years, as a member of support staff, to get to this point is the primary reason why Ill be striking today. Ill be representing my colleagues who are not yet in a position to take this stand. Student tuition fees have increased, and money is spent on improving services to meet the associated (justifiable) expectation of the student population, who will accrue massive debts in order to gain marketable skills. However this does not translate into fairer conditions for the staff who work hard to ensure the continued success of our Higher Education sector. This affects all areas of staff: from academic staff to technicians, cleaners and the myriad other roles that maintain the smooth everyday running of our Universities, with zero hour contracts still utilised in some areas which continue to perpetuate job instability. Those are my reasons. Heres another perspective that is all too familiar: plashingvole.blogspot.co.uk/2013/10/why-i-will-be-on-strike-tomorrow.html I apologise for any inconvenience this may cause to students and colleagues, but hope that you understand the importance of taking a stand.
