My Response to Nobel and Malala: It is a comfort to me that the Norwegian Academy picked Kailas Satyarthi as well as Malala for this years Prize. Malala is a symbol. There exists no current empirical proof that her speeches and presence has indeed transformed education for young children (for which she won the prize). It takes approximately five years for a policy change to be fully implemented and measurable. Thus, Kailash, who has been doing the same work without (Western) media coverage for years, covers the empirical. His work can be traced, measured, and judged on a higher level than Malalas. I am okay with her award only because it is shared. THAT SAID--It should be kept in mind that the Nobel Peace Prize is NOT a lifetime achievement award. Dr. Martin Luther King, for example, won the prize before the Civil Rights Movement legislation we all cherish was passed. These prizes are meant to be an encouragement. They are the West noting whom they find relevant (internationally) for us to follow and idolize. I simply hope that Malala (I have not researched it, but surely she is the youngest Nobel Laureate in history) lives up to the potential the Academy sees in her.
