My WOD hint today came with an impromptu rant. I fully admit, I am still learning but that is the point. I always will be. Never stop learning and never forget where you started out. Far too often the elites forget that and, those just trying to survive, let alone thrive are ignored for the BIG LIFTS. When that happens tell me, Coach youve lost sight of why you chose this path.. Im not looking to train athletes. I just want others to take part in my passion and hopefully find theirs. 15/09/2014 WOD HINT: BACK TO SCHOOL FOR YOU! Crossfit 101 less the O-lifting at high speeds well be substituting DB or MED BALLS. Heres what you need to know... Lifts like snatches, high pulls, and cleans are highly technical lifts, and as such require a lot more practice and athleticism than barbell curls. The lifts arent inherently dangerous, but in a fatigued state – such as after 10-plus reps with a challenging weight – things can get dicey. Know your limits and scale or Ill scale it for you! Any big lift performed poorly is dangerous not just O- lifts. A highly technical exercise performed poorly is obviously dangerous, but that applies to any big exercise in the gym, not just the Olympic lifts. Bad technique comes from bad coaching, regardless of the lift. Lets set that foundation before jumping in feet first. Thats what were doing. The barbell allows us to use more weight and engage more muscle and get that big fat ego boost but thats where my concern comes in. I wont refute the general observation that theres considerable breakdown from perfect form during high rep Olympic lifting, but its the responsibility of the coach to scale the weight correctly so the athlete can maintain correct form and not have the athlete practice poor motor patterns. It can be avoided through simple coaching. High rep Olympic lifting doesnt make you a lousy lifter; bad technique and bad coaching makes you a lousy lifter. Starting TODAY we are developing a culture where the emphasis is proper form before all else! I will not be accused of not caring. I do. So much so that I will not allow your or my ego to impede your health. Go ahead and get huge quick only to do, as so many have (including myself) burn out after 2 years of typical Crossfit. The constant pressure, the lack of true lifting knowledge, the nagging ache from poor movement patterns. Whose fault is that? MINE! The Crossfit Pyramid has been flipped upside down. Too much focus on the sport and too little regard for skill. Take the road less traveled, try the slow path. Its far more enduring. Train smarter not harder. Sara
