My campaign lawn signs are being taken. No surprise there. The surprise came when I found out who was one of the people taking them. The Mayor of Schuylerville, John Sherman, was caught by two Saratoga County Sheriff Deputies in possession of 2 of my signs. He gave them to the deputies who retuned them to me. According to the Deputies, he admitted to having taken them. Mr. Sherman is a member of the Town Republican Committee…the same Committee that endorsed my opponent. Mr. Sherman also collected signatures for my opponents ballot petitions. The Deputies told me this morning that Mr. Sherman claimed he took my signs down so as to beautify the section of land they were on (a triangle of land on the side of Rt. 29 near the apple orchard---state owned public land). My signs have been missing from that spot for a week. Mr. Sherman never called me to ask that the signs be taken down or to tell me he had them. Nor, as the Mayor of Schuylerville, does he have the responsibility of maintaing state land….or the power to take signs placed there. Taking property of another with intent to permanently deprive the other of the property is larceny. The neighbor who took the other 3 signs from the same plot of land admitted the theft to me yesterday. He then told me John Sherman had the other 2 signs. The neighbor had no political motives. He explained he hates lawn signs across the road from his house and takes any that get put up---no matter who puts them up. He has been doing it for years. He has lived in the same house for 40 years and is a bit territorial. He and I made peace. He agreed to not take any more of my signs and I agreed to just put one up in that area instead of 2 or 3. The neighbor took me out to his backyard and we uncovered 3 of my signs from under a pike of yard debris. The deputies found the other 2 with the Mayor. The neighbor said it was nothing personal and I believe him. I cant say the same about the Mayor. Mr. Sherman has been actively supporting my opponent since the GOP Committee had to make a decision about who to endorse. He had my signs and never called to return them to me. I suspect dirty politics and petty theft. The deputies came to my house this morning to tell me this is now in the hands of the investigators. Sheriff Zurlo has been notified. This is apparently a hot potato and they dont issue deputies oven mitts. More on this as news comes in...
