My cousin Ben wrote a wonderful tribute to my grandmother. She passed away this morning after 102 years on this earth. It may sound strange, but I think of her refrigerator pickles, and copper penny carrots. All the produce from her back garden. Her aspirin bottles full of pennies, always ready for a game of Sheepshead. And coffee percolating on the stovetop. I will miss her and am sad. But Im relieved she is finally at peace. The world lost a very special woman early this morning. My Grandmother was 102, and was an amazing, beautiful person. I’ll never forget all the Christmas holidays she spent at my house, the card games we played, the garage sales we stopped at, the trips to A&W for root beer floats, and of course, her hugs. She was thrilled when I decided to go to Carroll, since my Grandpa went to Carroll way back in the 30’s. She touched the lives of so many people, and had a personality that always made people smile. Nothing made me feel better than the times when grandma would tell me “I’m proud of you.” She was one of the main reasons why I went into nursing, and will always be my inspiration to be the best nurse I can possibly be. To the entire staff at Odd Fellow Nursing Home, thank you from the bottom of my heart, for your care, compassion, and true kindness towards my grandma and my entire family for these past 5 years. I was so lucky to have several of my coworkers and previous classmates care for her during her time there. You all took such good care of her, and helped her to live as long as she possibly could. Whenever I went to visit her, I always left with the feeling that the staff truly cared about her. That is probably one of the biggest gifts you can give a family. I’m relieved that grandma can finally be in peace, but I am also so sad to have lost someone that I love so much. I will always love you grandma, and the memories of you will live on.
