My dear friend, Dr. Sanjeev Verma (who was my colleague in NPSP - WHO) and who has worked extensively in Ethiopia and Nigeria and is presently working in Kenya has given this latest feedback on Ebola : Ominous signs... It seems unlikely that we can keep tabs on all arrivals from West Africa. Every day there are practically hundreds who fly from Lagos/Monrovia/Freetown/Accraa to New Delhi, Mumbai, Calcutta or even Chennai, transiting usually through Middle East. While exit controls are well in place in most international airports, Ebolas incubation period (up to 21 days) means that any recently infected person who doesnt show symptoms could actually make the trip to India without triggering alarms. From personal experience at New Delhi airport the arrival checks are nominal and loosely enforced, with a number of passengers exiting the terminal holding completed Ebola information cards that should have been handed to immigration officials. Scary times for frequent fliers. This, I think, is very disturbing !!!...........even though the epidemic is leveling off in Liberia (remember the Epidemic curve I taught you in class ?)
