My drives happen with very little forethought. There is a back pack that stays in the truck. It contains two days change of clothes. By the door of my apartment there is a bakers rack full of gear. My main camera bag, GoPro case, tripods, monopods, binoculars, night vision scope, camera bags, hard cases, dry boxes and one canvas bag sit ready for me to grab and walk out the door. The canvas bag stays packed with toiletries and eye drops and odd things I have learned that come in handy like a magnifying glass and head lamp. So I decide to go for a drive. Time of day does not particularly matter. I leave when I leave. I love driving all night maybe catching a catnap in a rest area or a dirt road if need be. Where? Sometimes I know roughly where I am going. Its usual regional areas like the Permian Basin. Nothing real specific. My favorite trips just happen. Grab my main camera bag my canvas bag and walk out the door. There are real paper atlases that stay in the truck. There are national, state and back road copies. I stow the gear, crank the truck and pull up regional weather radar on my iPhone. If there is some major weather event in Texas or adjoining states then that is the direction I drive. If no interesting weather I will decide by the compass. I will pick a direction and start driving. I am a back roads kind of guy. In the empty places I love so much, when I have to choose a road at a intersection, it is always which direction the road is in the worse shape. Most of my drives end up on a dirt road. The truck is four wheel drive. It has GPS. It has a shooting/sleeping platform on the roof. It has a 8000 lb. winch that can be moved to either end of the truck. The truck is always packed with recovery gear such as chains, straps, boards, hydraulic and HiLift jacks. Multiple inverters provide power for the lap top and battery chargers. Tire plugging kit and DC compressor are complimented by mechanics tools. Flash lights, coolers and first aid kits complete the gear. So I drive. If I am enjoying myself I keep going. I may go for a couple of hours or a couple of days. I think if I could, I would drive forever.
