My father Mac McFarlin fought with the 24th U.S. Marines in WWII. He fought in the Pacific, island-hopping in the Marshall Islands, Kwajalein, Namur and Roi Islands. He was wounded in action June 18, 1944, on Saipan, where some of the fiercest fighting took place in the war. The Purple Heart he was awarded is on the right. He was shot through the right elbow by a Japanese sniper. His buddy could see the glow of the snipers gunfire and fatally shot the sniper, who fell out of the tree where he had been hiding. I have Dads Marine Corps yearbook, in which he marked with small xs on the photos of each of his buddies who died while fighting. After a year of rehab in the Camp Pendleton hospital, Dads arm was restored to full capacity through his hard work.
