My father was born in1930. He contracted measles, whooping cough, chicken pox, and scarlet fever - all in the same year. He missed a good portion of his fourth grade school year because he was sick with these childhood illnesses. He did not develop any serious complications and spent zero time in the hospital. He recovered completely. My father was never hospitalized until, at the age of 60, he received his first ever flu vaccine, and had a stroke. Childhood diseases occur in childhood for a reason; to strengthen and train the immune system. My dad is now a handsome, active 84 year-old who still drives, gardens, and enjoys his live-in love, Donna. Childhood illnesses train our bodies to be strong and they prepare us for the long-range fight against serious illness. Without them, its like expecting to compete in the Mr. Universe Pageant without ever having set foot in the gym.
