My first job in advertising was 50 years ago this last June. I was an intern at Cole & Weber which at the time was the largest agency in the Northwest. I worked for college credits and that fall was hired part-time as a copywriter while finishing my senior year at the University of Washington. If memory serves, my plan was to use advertising as a means to get a degree and then find a real career. However, I got sidetracked when I fell in love with the profession. My love for the “game” increased as I grew professionally and personally. There were several things about the agency business I loved: being able to work with significant, world-class clients; growing Elgin Syferd to be the largest and best in the market; selling to DDB, one of the biggest and best global agencies. But most of all, I loved working with the thousands of whacky, creative people that make up the bizarre world of advertising. When I retired, I decided to write a book as something to keep me busy and out of my wife’s hair. However, to write anything close to a text book goes against my style. The result is a humorous account of my career. What makes it funny? The crazy co-workers and clients and the experiences we shared. You will find a lot of professional and life lessons (most of which I learned the hard way) but my real goal was to raise the curtain on the profession I love and give you a bunch of smiles, a few chuckles and maybe even an out-loud laugh of two. An autographed copy is now available to friends and family at a special price. Buy it now at huckster-book.
