My hand was forced. After 4+ years, my work demanded that I turn in my cell phone and enter the current decade. As I researched my phone options, one of the features frequently highlighted to me was the presence of dual cameras on most of the new models. Yes, my old phone had a camera, but it was designed to take pictures of things facing away from me. The new ones have made it just as easy to take pictures of the operator behind the camera. Yes, the “selfie” is so in demand that manufacturers have had to insert a second camera into their products to feed our fascination with self. I’m not against the advancement in technology, but I am concerned with our regression into selfishness. I would guess that when Edison invented the photograph, he didn’t foresee it being used to capture the image of what was behind the camera. Yet, that is precisely what we have done – taken something that was intended to place our focus on others and use it to literally focus on ourselves. I don’t need to be encouraged to focus on myself – I’m already a selfish little stinker. Instead, I need to be reminded to place my focus on others, and their needs, first. Every time you pull out your phone – whether to text, call, or take a picture – ask yourself, “Who’s it all about – me or others?” As Paul reminds us, “do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others” (Phil 2:4). –Dave (To receive these daily devotions via email, subscribe at asIAMministries.org)
