My heart is heavy, reading so many of these posts. In the stages of grief, it is clear that many are still in the anger phase; that we have a long way to go in this arduous process of healing. As a mediator, I can tell you that when people dwell in anger, its because they are afraid of what remains when they let go. Every picture Ive seen of Sarah has been of her smiling. Every word Ive heard about her was kind. She does not strike me as someone who instilled anger in others, nor bitterness, nor a sense of retribution. I also sense that she would be uncomfortable from all this attention. Her lifes work was, after all, behind the camera. Sarah worked hard. She took pride in her craft. She found joy in filmmaking. It was that dedication to her craft, along with her infectious smile and tireless spirit - and not solely her death - that inspired us to action, for we take pride in OUR craft. Take pride in yourselves, and in your craft. Hold yourselves and one another to higher standards, every day. Be there to pick up the slack when a colleague is falling behind; encourage them to do better - and be gracious. Convert the rage and anger into something positive and worthwhile - something that would make Sarah beam with pride. Work together to make sets safer by informing yourself and your colleagues of your rights and responsibilities. Read up on the bulletins. Take an OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 course. Have safety briefings. Make it a part of your professional calling. And, yes, as your conscience allows, refuse work that is dangerous, unsafe, or unprofessional - and not just this project, but all projects that are not held to high standards. And when you accept or refuse work, do so as a professional with class, grace, and style. In these ways, each of us will be able to move beyond the anger that blinds us and imprisons us. In these ways, we will find peace and change the culture, one production at a time. Much love.
