My heart & mind instruct me in the night seasons. (Ps..16:7) The key phrase is heart & mind. The Hebrew word is kilyah (kill-yaw). Its often translated reins. The word literally is kidneys thought by the Hebrews in the Old Testament to be the seat of affections. Strongs states that kilyah represents the mind as the interior. Modern scholars dont like the link between the words heart & reins used for kidneys. Our word renal comes from the word reins. Modern scholars say it will alter the meanings of too many songs. I Left My Heart in San Francisco would be changed to I left my kidneys in San Francisco. You can see why the word reins or kidney have fallen into disfavor w/scholars. Referring to instruction received in the night seasons, translators changed reins & kidney to words more sensitive yet accurate. The New Century Version reads, Even at night I feel His leading. The New English Bible says, In the night time wisdom comes to me in my inward parts. Rotherham states, Surely by night my impulses admonish me. George Lamas reads, My intuition guides me during the night. Gods Word reads, in the night my conscience warns me. Other translators say what instructs during the night seasons is grace, thoughts, dreams, emotions, inner-self, my most secret thoughts, & my heart is my mentor. Any way you look at it, instruction at night is available to each believer. (The Living Bible) - I will bless the Lord Who counsels me; He gives me wisdom in the night. He tells me what to do.
