My husband usually beat me, says killer wife A 27-year-old woman, Folashade Shodiya, has said she was forced to stab her husband to death because the latter habitually abused her at home. Shodiya, a clothes’ seller, was living with her 39-year-old husband, Jude Igbedion, at Balogun Street, Owutu, in the Ikorodu area of Lagos before the incident. PUNCH Metro had reported on November 19, 2014, that the police arrested Shodiya, an indigene of Abeokuta, Ogun State, for allegedly stabbing her husband to death. The case was reported at the Owutu Police Division. Our correspondent learnt that what resulted to murder started as a quarrel between the couple over issues bothering mainly on finance. In her statement to the police, Shodiya explained that when the beatings she suffered from her husband reached a level, she thought of taking her life and ate a poison. She added that she, however, did not die because some neighbours came to her rescue. She said, “I had dated my husband for about seven years now. The only child I have for him, named Amanda, will be a year-old this January (2015). “In 2009, we started living together, but we were not legally married. He had a habit of beating me over trivial issues. Sometimes, he would send me out of the house, and I would pack to my father’s place in Abeokuta. “Two or three days later, he would show up and started begging them to release me. Around November 2014, he started a fresh round of beating. On November 11, I wanted to take my life because of the maltreatment I suffered. I took poison and expected to die, but neighbours came to my rescue and I eventually did not. “While beating me, he usually told me that the reason he married me was to give him children and nothing more.” Shodiya added that on November 13, when the murder incident occurred, she had taken their kitchen knife to defend herself, “only for my husband’s chest to hit the knife”. She said, “At about 9am, there was a quarrel, during which he grabbed a baby hangar and began to beat me. I ran to our kitchen and picked a knife to scare him. I stood at the door with the knife. As he opened the door, his chest met the object; he fell and started to bleed. “I did not deliberately kill my husband. That was why I did not run away. Instead, I called my neighbours for help, and we tried to rush him to a hospital, but he died on the way.” The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Kenneth Nwosu, had confirmed the incident, adding that the case had also been transferred to the State Criminal Investigations Department for further investigation. A police source told our correspondent that Shodiya would soon be charged to court as the SCID had concluded investigations on the matter. Copyright PUNCH.All rights reserved.
