My kids learned to turn it down a notch and behave when I raised - TopicsExpress

My kids learned to turn it down a notch and behave when I raised my eyebrow at them, knowing their otherwise patient mother might have a lil something to say about their behavior; not to mention a muted version of solitary and/or hard labor to keep them busy. Its called discipline, from the Latin disciple, to teach. And its a never-ending, often exhausting job...repeating yourself until the lesson sinks in. At what point will the parents of these minor-aged demonstrators step in to take control of their own children? I was raised to wave to the police officer and as a young female teen to drive directly to the police station if necessary for protection. With tensions high and the media fanning the flames, it would appear the police in this video (and likely many school counsellors) were in place to aid students and school administrators as necessary; yet they cant even say, Youre going to be late for class, without potentially being accused of injustice. I (sometimes begrudgingly) listened when the nuns at my school said, Throw out that gum, or Be sure to wear the correct uniform socks tomorrow...and give me your Board Card now (five strikes...after school Board Hearing). Never once have I had a ruler across my palms, nor did I ever see or hear of it occurring to a classmate (not that it should). Resisting Sr. Francesca in high school would not have been a wise decision, lest she unleash her intellect and seven hells on you. There are rules and laws in place that are meant to be respected. When rules are broken, we can expect to be reprimanded. In this country, its our American right to question authority and speak our minds; however, our voices are more welcome and acknowledged when utilizing the proper platform, even if our audience doesnt necessarily agree. Taunting those who risk their lives to protect and serve is not the proper platform. The officers in this video would respond to a call if any one of these disrespectful students or their families needed them. In my opinion, raising awareness of any form of injustice is our right and duty as humans. Can we at least agree that speaking civilly to each other and behaving with some sense of decorum is a good start? Humans have souls and a higher intellect than the animals with which we inhabit this beautiful Earth. Lets try to remember that though were all beautifully unique, we are indeed cut of the same cloth and in this together. And lets not forget to look around at whats going on behind closed doors around the world and in Washington (Russia for starters) while smoke screens are being placed at the expense of at least two grieving families in our Midwestern community.
