My latest missive: Your quote for the day: Communicating is a contact sport. Bert Decker Hi Folks, Ive been having some stimulating conversations lately with both performers and presenters. On one hand the presenters are just about unanimous in wanting to hire performers who not only sing and play well but also communicate well with the audience. On the other are the performers, some who consider themselves entertainers as well as musicians, and others who feel they should get out of the way of the music and let it speak for itself. For my part, I will entertain you if youll let me even if you werent expecting it. And thats where it gets tricky. If you play Anderson Fair the audience is there to hear you. Its a concert situation and the performance is the primary focus. Then, there are venues where the performance is there to enhance the atmosphere such as a restaurant or wine bar. I love knowing and playing both. At a restaurant I will gently insinuate myself into your consciousness all the while knowing the meal and the company are the stars of the evening. In a concert situation both myself and the audience should be the stars and come away learning something from the night. Otherwise, as Strother Martin put it in Cool Hand Luke, What we have here is failure to communicate. This week in Houston, Im performing both a concert and a restaurant.
