My letter-to-the-editor sent: The Opinion contribution, Boycotting settlements is not anti-Israel by Naomi Paiss (Feb. 10) is wrong for several reasons. First, since there are other illegal occupations and illegal settlements, notably in the Turkish-occupied north Cyprus territory and the Moroccan-occupied Western Sahara area, by not combatting those, the BDSers are most definitely anti-Israel in their discriminatory behavior. Second, the entire justification for a boycott is that they are illegal for otherwise, it would be simply a matter of a political viewpoint which could not support such a boycott campaign. In that there are many law professors who deny the so-called illegality of the Jewish communities, foremost because they are actually located in the territory international law decided should be the Jewish national home and that Israels administration of the area resulted from an Arab-initiated war of aggression, a boycott cannot be morally seen as right. Third, instead of peace, the boycott would injure relations between the two populations rather than seek, if even through economic, cultural and social measures, a modicum of coexistence that would encourage lessening of Arab terror. And last, since settlements did not exist in the pre-1967 era, how could their dismantlement be part of the solution if they werent a part of the problem of Arab hostility towards Israel (and not any of the settlements)?
