This weekend were taking a lil mini vacation on the homestead. Time to reflect on some of the lessons learned this year so far. - Pumpkin and zucchini do NOT like the new spot I put them in. - Tomatillos in pots doesnt work either. - Peppers are way too crowded in the kitchen garden. - While cucumbers and beans get along fabulously, planting them on the same trellis is a bad idea. - Chickens CAN clear a 5 fence. - My lady sized chain saw can NOT handle 100+ year old oak. - 60+ tomato plants are the number I need to shoot for. - 60+ peppers arent enough. - Cabbage and cauliflower doesnt work well in the food plot, spring or fall... Move those to the pumpkin patch next year. - Newspaper/straw for weed control works only a little. - The ugly spot by the entrance gate is still stubbornly refusing to be beautified by killing nearly ANY plant in that bed. - Raspberries are quite happy on my fence line. - Apparently elderberry CAN be rooted from a broken, green cutling. - Need more beans. - After 3 years of trying, I have to concede that corn is just NOT going to work here. - Theres no such thing as enough firewood for the winter here.
