My longtime friend Dawn Kjeldsen Freeland posted this and I couldnt help but agree with her. Sadly, these kinds of articles exist now. One of the misbegotten products of social media. It used to be customary that in order to get published youd have to be vetted. Things like getting a degree in journalism, honing your craft, gaining respect from your contemporaries and landing a great writing gig were how you got public attention with your writings. Now, any raisin cake that wanders online and can remember their password can offer up a critique of anything regardless of their experience with or knowledge of the subject matter. Call it a blog and youre an instant journalist. Even more sad: people will regard whatever tumbles out of your head (to some degree) as truth. With Brunos performance, anyone with any taste could see the brilliance. Americans have been anesthetized to true pop artistry because musical talent has often been upstaged by and replaced with a spectacle. Its happened so much in this setting that a lot of people cant tell the difference. A true artist can electrify an audience with an instrument, a song and charisma. I thought Bruno did just that. The light/pyro show couldnt keep up with his talent. Oh, by the way, him starting the show on drums was no stunt joke, like Ive seen with Justin Bieber. That was legit groovin on the kit by any drummers standards. Ill take that over a 150 member twerk team and pyrotechnics. So, in response to this hit piece passing as musical critique: the only disaster here is your inability to recognize and asses true artistry.
