My mom used to tell the story of one of the people she knew when - TopicsExpress

My mom used to tell the story of one of the people she knew when she was young. It seems a lady had baked a pie and her son who had been outside all day working on their farm came in hungry and asked for a piece of the pie. She told him no, that it would be cooled and ready later when he was done with his chores. The son begged for a piece but she still refused, so he gave up and went back outside to finish his work. A storm was brewing as he left, and before he made it back, he was struck by lightning and killed. For the rest of her life she suffered soul searing guilt over not letting him have a piece of that pie, the last thing he asked her for. I was reminded of this when my own Mom was in her last days. It was my sister Rosas birthday and we had a lot of food and stuff to celebrate. Mom was VERY sick. She was under doctors orders to refrain from eating many foods for a variety of health reasons. I remember at the party Mom asked me if I would go get her some Kentucky Fried Chicken. It was the one thing she wanted. I told her no. KFC is very greasy and she was restricted from eating greasy foods. I denied her for the best of reasons. It was for her health. Mom died a few days after that. All I could think about was that I should have let her have that damned chicken! To this day, I still feel guilt and sadness for denying her that chicken. I know why I did what I did. I had the best of reasons. I can justify it with reason and science. But I wish with all my heart I had gotten that chicken for her. Please remember that life is short. None of us know if we will live past today. Take time to enjoy life and its many simple pleasures. Dont deny yourself or others those things that make life worth living because youre concerned about adding two more days to the end of your life when youre eighty five years old, living in a hospital bed on tubes that help you eat and breathe. Live life NOW! Enjoy life NOW. You might not be able to tomorrow. Eat, drink and be merry for tomorrow you may die.
