My mother and I, as a lad, visited Leningrad from Odessa in 1970 - TopicsExpress

My mother and I, as a lad, visited Leningrad from Odessa in 1970 for a week, a fascinating visit... -- in the company of our friend (and minder), Tanya. She was a lovely, articulate (seemingly anti-Soviet) language student aged about 25; I was 15, and her initial idea, agreed to by my mother, was that she would take me on the visit alone... But my father vetoed that when he heard it...:( Anyway, we stayed at the Astoria Hotel, where the staff were keen to tell us the Nazi generals had allotted rooms for themselves -- but never made it thanks to the heroism of the defenders... I must upload the several pics someday. On the way from Odessa to Leningrad, my mother and I were stranded for several hours, midnight to about 4am, at an airport, perhaps Minsk, due to heavy snowfall. (Tanya went separately and met us in Leningrad). Very peculiarly at the airport we were led to a VIP waiting room where we were the only visitors: on the coffee table were issues of Soviet Land in only two languages: English, and our native Bengali... Imagine that... how thoughtful to find a Bengali edition of Soviet Land for our reading pleasure in a provincial airport VIP lounge just in case we landed there at 2 am due to heavy snow conditions... Amazing precision... :) via Robert Coalson
