My, my, but were a paranoid and fearful society. I am astounded at the fear and fear-mongering going on with this Ebola virus thing. A couple of infected Americans are brought home to give them the best chance to survive, and Americas collective panties are in a knot! The Ebola virus is not of the airborne type, and can only be spread by the exchange of bodily fluids. The hospital where they are housed (in a small separate wing from the main hospital) is state-of-the-art in containing such viruses, and there is zero chance that it will spread. But there is in fact a real chance these Americans will survive because they were brought here to be treated by state-of-the-art medical procedures and personnel. But this paranoid, not-in-my-backyard attitude is prevalent, and one and the same with the attitude expressed over transferring several of the Guantanamo Bay detainees to U.S. shores back in 2009. Obama signed an executive order closing the prison just after his election the first time, but oh no!!---the Congress wasnt having it. They wouldnt approve legislation to house these people in a federal supermax facility---as if anyone has, or ever COULD, escape from one (politifact/truth-o-meter/statements/2009/may/21/barack-obama/obama-correct-no-inmate-has-ever-escaped-supermax-/). Yes, a significant part of America prefers to live in an alternate, false, world of illusion where conspiracies are rampant, scientists are suspect, and empirical evidence is ignored. We further see this in the so-called Global Warming Debate---when there is in fact no debate to it. Global warming, or climate change if you prefer, is a fact, and is as certain as the rising of the sun tomorrow. And we can, and better, reverse the trend of pouring more carbon into the atmosphere, or the early signs of it we are experiencing now will seem like a sneeze compared to the ravages of it in just a few decades. Maybe one day America will grow up and put on its Big Boy Pants. Much of Europe already has.The Millennials give me some hope in this regard.
