My niece, Anni Girard Maber, found a story about my dad on the web. Of all the stories he told me about his time in the war, which included Normandy beach on D-Day and The Battle of the Bulge, he never told me about signing a Nazi flag. I knew he was one of the first to get to the Eagles nest, and he liked to talk about sitting in Hitlers chair with his feet on the desk. There he is in the picture standing over a fox hole looking large as life, a kid of about 28 years old. The flag apparently made its way to a museum last year...my dad passed away a few years ago, never knowing this part of him was going to live on.
